Bloom Filter Simulator

Visually simulate Bloom filter behavior and calculate optimal parameters

How to Use

  1. Set the bit array size (m) and number of hash functions (k) in the Simulator tab
  2. Enter text in the input field and click the Add button to add elements
  3. The relevant bits in the bit array will be highlighted so you can see which bits are set
  4. Enter text in the Check Membership field to check if an element is in the set
  5. Calculate optimal parameters from the expected number of elements and desired false positive rate in the Parameter Calculator tab

Use Cases

  • When you want to visually learn how Bloom filters work
  • When you want to consider parameters before adopting a Bloom filter in web apps or databases
  • When you want to understand the trade-off between false positive rate and memory usage
  • When you want to see how the number of hash functions affects filter performance

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Bloom filter? ▼

A Bloom filter is a probabilistic data structure that quickly determines whether an element is in a set. If it says the element is not in the set, it's certain; if it says it is, there's a possibility of a false positive.

How can I control the false positive rate? ▼

You can reduce the false positive rate by increasing the bit array size (m) or adjusting the number of hash functions (k) to the optimal value. You can check the optimal values in the Parameter Calculator tab.

Is my input data sent to the server? ▼

No, all calculations are performed in your browser. Your input data is never sent to external servers.
