systemd Timer Generator

Interactively generate systemd .timer / .service unit files via GUI

How to Use

  1. Set the unit base name (e.g., backup) and unit type (system / user)
  2. Choose an OnCalendar preset or enter each field (weekday, year, month, day, hour, minute, second) and click "Add OnCalendar line" to build the execution schedule
  3. Configure monotonic timers (OnBootSec, etc.) and other timer options as needed
  4. Enter ExecStart (execution command), Type, user, and security settings on the service side
  5. Copy the generated .timer / .service files and place and enable them following the displayed installation guide

Use Cases

  • When unfamiliar with cron and want to set up periodic execution while understanding each field's meaning
  • When creating unit files while comprehensively reviewing systemd timer options
  • When wanting to preview the next execution time of an OnCalendar expression beforehand
  • When wanting to quickly generate service units with enhanced security (sandbox) settings

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an OnCalendar expression? ▼

It is a calendar expression used in systemd real-time timers. It follows the format "weekday year-month-day hour:minute:second", where each field supports list(,), range(..), repetition(/), and wildcard (*). You can also use shortcuts like minutely and daily.

Why are both .timer and .service needed? ▼

In systemd timer, the .timer file defines "when to run" and the .service file with the same name defines "what to run". Services started by timers typically use Type=oneshot.

Is the data I enter sent to a server? ▼

No, all processing is done entirely in the browser. The commands and settings you enter are never sent outside.
